Water in your basement right now? Do this first
- Stop the water source. For a pipe or appliance, close your main water shut-off valve. For a sewer backup, stop using all water in the house.
- Turn off power to wet areas, only if it is safe. Don't stand in water to reach the electrical panel.
- Move valuables up. Get documents, electronics and keepsakes off the floor and out of the basement.
- Take photos for insurance. Photograph the water and everything it touched before you move or throw anything out.
- Don't use a household vacuum on water. It isn't built for it and can be a shock hazard.

Insurance help
What your insurer pays for depends on where the water came from:
- Burst pipe
- Typically covered by standard home policies, with limits if the home was left unattended in winter.
- Sewer backup
- Water coming up through your own drains. A separate add-on that standard policies don't include.
- Overland flood
- Water entering from outside, like surface water and rain runoff. Another separate add-on.
We document the damage the way adjusters need it. Read overland flood vs sewer backup insurance or see our insurance claim help.

Wet materials can grow mould
Drywall, insulation and carpet that stay wet can start growing mould. Drying them properly the first time is the best prevention. If mould has already started, our sister company Edmonton Mould handles inspection and removal.
Questions people ask
What should I do first if my basement is flooding?
Stop the source if you safely can: close the main water valve for a pipe, or stop using water for a sewer backup. Move valuables up, take photos for your insurer, then call us.
Does home insurance cover a flooded basement?
It depends on the cause. Burst pipes are typically covered by standard policies. Overland flood and sewer backup are separate add-ons that standard Canadian policies do not include.
What is the difference between overland flood and sewer backup?
Overland flood is water entering from outside, such as surface water and rain runoff. Sewer backup is water coming up through your own drains. Insurers cover them with different add-ons.
Can my carpet and drywall be saved?
Often, if the water was clean and drying starts quickly. Materials soaked by sewage or outside water usually have to be removed. We measure moisture and tell you plainly.
How much does water damage cleanup cost?
Most water damage restoration jobs in Canada cost $3,000 to $10,000. A flooded basement with clean water typically runs $4,000 to $8,000, and sewer backup cleanup $5,000 to $15,000+. Your price is confirmed after we inspect.
Who does the work?
Water Damage Edmonton takes your job directly and sends our own crews. Every crew is insured and professionally vetted.
How do I stop it happening again?
Fix the cause. That can mean better lot grading, longer downspouts, sealing foundation cracks or a backwater valve. EPCOR offers a backwater valve subsidy of up to $800 for eligible Edmonton homes.
